- Preload date: Tuesday, Nov 10, 2026
- PS5 start: midnight, your local time
- Xbox Series X|S start: 00:00 GMT, the same moment worldwide
- Download size: up to 212 GB, depending on your device
- Play unlocks: Thursday, Nov 19, 2026, at midnight your local time
Who can preload GTA 6
Preloading is for digital pre-orders. If you bought GTA 6 from the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store, you can download the files ahead of launch. Physical copies of GTA 6 are code-in-box, which reach retailers from Nov 12. Once you redeem the code inside the box, your download can start the same way. If you have not ordered the game yet, there is nothing to preload until you do.
GTA 6 preload start times
On PS5, the preload opens at midnight in your own time zone on Nov 10, so it rolls out region by region. On Xbox Series X|S, it opens at 00:00 GMT on Nov 10 for everyone at the same moment, which is Nov 9 in the evening for players in the Americas. Whichever console you use, the files sit locked on your drive until launch. Preloading never lets you play early.
How to start the preload on PS5
Go to your Game Library, select GTA 6, and choose Download when the button appears on Nov 10. You can also open the game’s page in the PlayStation Store and start it there. To let it happen on its own, keep your console connected and turn on automatic downloads in Settings, under Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then Automatic Updates. In rest mode, allow the console to stay connected to the internet.
How to start the preload on Xbox Series X|S
Open My games and apps, find GTA 6 in your library or on its Microsoft Store page, and choose Pre-install when it appears. You can also start the download from the Xbox mobile app, which is handy if you are away from home on Nov 10. In Settings, under General and Power options, keep the console set so it can download while it is off.
How much storage to clear: the 212 GB question
Rockstar says the preload can take up to 212 GB depending on your device. Treat that number as a ceiling, not one exact size for everyone: your console may need less, but clearing space for the full amount means no nasty surprise on preload day. Check your free space first, in Storage settings on PS5, or in My games and apps on Xbox. The fastest ways to make room: delete games you have finished, because you can always download them again later; move PS4 games and media to a USB drive; and clear old capture-gallery clips you no longer need. Aim to have the space ready before Nov 10, not on the day.
If your preload does not start
First, do not panic: rollouts can take a little time to appear. Restart the console, then check the game’s store page and your library again. Make sure you are signed in to the account that bought the game, and that automatic downloads are on. If the download stalls, pause and resume it, which fixes most stalls.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I play GTA 6 early if I preload?
A: No. The preload only puts the files on your console. The game unlocks at midnight local time on Nov 19, 2026 for everyone, and no edition or trick changes that.
Q: Is 212 GB the final install size?
A: It is the maximum preload size Rockstar has given, and it can differ by device. Rockstar has not published one single final install size, so plan around the 212 GB figure to be safe.
Q: I bought the code-in-box version. When can I download?
A: Code-in-box copies reach retailers from Nov 12, 2026. Redeem the code in your console’s store, and the preload download will be available to start.
Q: Does preloading cost anything extra?
A: No. Preloading is part of your digital pre-order or your redeemed code. You only pay the price of the game itself.
